Wax, ceramic coating, and PPF all get called paint protection, but they do very different jobs. Here is when each one makes sense.
Wax
Wax adds gloss and a little water repellency, but it washes off in roughly two months. It is maintenance, not protection.
Ceramic coating
A ceramic coating bonds to the paint and lasts years. It makes the car easier to clean and adds chemical and UV resistance, but it does not stop rock chips.
PPF
PPF is the only one that takes a physical hit. It absorbs rock chips and abrasion and self-heals light scratches with heat.
How to use them together
The strongest setup pairs them: PPF on the high-impact zones for physical protection, and a ceramic coating over the top for easy cleaning and gloss.
